Sightfishing?

With the the invention of electric trolling motors, Jack plates and tower boats, sight fishing is becoming a lost art. The above referenced technology have been invented to allow people to fish faster and more locations hoping to spook the fish out of the natural habitat so they can locate them. Captain Dave Dant specializes in finding fish, maneuvering the boat from the poling platform within casting distance and giving his guests the opportunity to cast and then see the strike! It almost seems impossible, but the fishing seems to be getting better and better every year with giant schools of huge redfish, and especially Tarpon providing spectacular entertainment for anglers, but also single tailing redfish, Tarpon and speckled Sea Trout foraging in the shallow saltwater grass flats on the western side of Tampa Bay in and around the Fort Desoto park. The above photograph is a typical single tailing fish (in this case a red drum) in the shallow flats, imagine seeing large schools all tailing at once. Dave will typically position you within casting distance of this target and it's up to you to throw an artificial, live or dead bait close enough for the fish to see or find it and not so close that you scare it away.

Sight fishing is not typically for the novice angler with little of no casting skills, you'll find yourself frustrated and your guide will often have to assist you if you can't make the cast, but it's a blast for those wanting the opportunity to actually see fish and sharpen their casting skills. Typically sight fishing is done with a spinning rod, but the fly caster is offered an extraordinary opportunity to bump up their casting skills as it's often necessary to cast over seventy feet accurately to present your streamer or crustacean pattern to be gobbled up. Make no mistake, sight fishing around the Tampa Bay area is as fun as it gets, but you'd better bump your game by practicing your casting before you ask your guide to take you sight fishing on crystal clear grass flats and lagoons.

Advanced

Sight fishing involves locating single or small groups of fish which are out prowling the flats looking to feed and then putting the boat so the angler can make a cast which places the bait or lure so it doesn’t spook the fish.  When all goes well, you can watch the fish eat your offering.  This type of fishing is not for the beginner.  It is a true test of your angling skill and the reward is so sweet.  In the Tampa Bay area we have very good sight fishing.  Once you learn to spot fish and make a good cast you will find that sight fishing is the most exciting and efficient way to fish and other methods just don’t compare.

Less Advanced

Finding fish is not usually a problem in this region.( Of course weather, tide and fishing pressure all contribute to a successful day of fishing)  For those anglers that feel sight fishing may not be their forte, we use other methods of catching fish which may not be so challenging. Using bait or artificials we target area that hold fish and bend the rod.
